Shape memory alloys (SMAs) are metals that “remember” their original shapes and can automatically recover from deformation at a certain temperature (Phase Transition Temperature). They are useful for such things as actuators that change shape, stiffness, position, natural frequency, and other mechanical characteristics in response to temperature or electromagnetic fields.
Ti-Ni alloys were the first and most useful of all shape-memory alloys. Its Phase Transition Temperature is very sensitive to the composition. (Each additional 0.1% Ni will cause the Phase Transition Temperature to drop 10 °C. Adding a third element will also significantly influence the Ti-Ni alloys’ Phase Transition Temperature). In addition, Ti-Ni alloys also have good heat and corrosion resistance, high strength, unique thermal and fatigue resistance, high biocompatibility, high damping characteristics, etc., which have won the material a wide range of applications.
Applications: Ti-Ni shape-memory alloy wires can be used in cell phone antennas, children’s toys, experimental materials, eyeglasses components, and medical equipment such as surgical stitching wires, birth control loops, and high-quality memory alloy wires of other areas.
